I have a student in grad school, getting a degree in music therapy. He was feeling overwhelmed with work and asked me about ways to improve his time management.
Instead, we ended up getting to the root of these feelings, which came from some adverse childhood experiences and from the culture of conservatories in general.
My big questions to him were: “Does this serve who you’re becoming? Can you go through your classes in a way that serves YOU, rather than the grade?” We both ended up feeling more energized and inspired after the lesson. I hope you enjoy this story!
Day 27 of 100 Days of Soulforce:

– The tension between belonging needs and growth needs
– Getting to the bottom of what had been going on
– Reframing grad school in terms of how it can serve the musician he was meant to become.

What’s “100 Days of Soulforce”?
I’m embarking on a mission to spread the word about Soulforce Performing Arts because I believe it is a needed message for artists of all kinds in our times. To that end, I’m making 100 videos over the coming 100 days (or so) to explain all the different angles and ideas, and to hopefully spark inspiration in you! Each video will have inspirational and practical ideas for you to bring more Soulforce to your life as a performing artist.
These ideas are a part of my upcoming book: “Soulforce Performance Arts: Redefining Artistic Performance, Practice, and Pedagogy in a World That’s Lost Its Mind.” Subscribers to my newsletter will get early access and special perks.
