The Spirit of the Gift helps us understand:
– How to feel more at home in the world
– How to make a living while doing something meaningful
– How to make art that goes beyond mere commodity
– How to lead a meaningful, abundant life as an artist
– How to master your craft with less tension and more joy
I’m writing a whole chapter of my book on the Spirit of the Gift because it speaks to me so deeply. It helps me understand the deep longings in my soul to be able to give my gifts well and to have them be well-received.
Day 19 of 100 Days of Soulforce:
– What is a gift?
– Why is the spirit of the gift crucial to the arts?
– How all of life, the sun, the earth, and your own birth are all gifts
– How gift helps us understand someone who’s a “sell-out”
– A story from a lesson I taught where my student was able to play much more freely once he sacrificed (i.e., made a gift of) his desire to show off in service of his real artistic aim: beauty

What’s “100 Days of Soulforce”?
I’m embarking on a mission to spread the word about Soulforce Performing Arts because I believe it is a needed message for artists of all kinds in our times. To that end, I’m making 100 videos over the coming 100 days (or so) to explain all the different angles and ideas, and to hopefully spark inspiration in you! Each video will have inspirational and practical ideas for you to bring more Soulforce to your life as a performing artist.
These ideas are a part of my upcoming book: “Soulforce Performance Arts: Redefining Artistic Performance, Practice, and Pedagogy in a World That’s Lost Its Mind.” Subscribers to my newsletter will get early access and special perks.
