We all love to play from the heart while on stage, but what about in the practice room? Are you just going through the motions as you do your scales and exercises? If so, then your performances will suffer because how you practice becomes how you perform.
In this video I give a live demonstration and explanation of how to play a simple one-octave A Major scale from the heart so that it sounds luminous, alive, and resonant. Then I teach you how to do it, too!
BONUS! Stick around to the end of the video for an improvisation of mine that comes from the heart. Cheers!
Day 9 of 100 Days of Soulforce:
– Is it possible to play scales from the heart?
– How “expressing hard” is not the same as playing from the heart
– Don’t mindlessly drill your scales, because how you practice becomes how you perform
– Live demo of the scale from the heart
– Why I don’t teach mindless repetition to my violin students
– Free improvisation at the end of the video

What’s “100 Days of Soulforce”?
I’m embarking on a mission to spread the word about Soulforce Performing Arts because I believe it is a needed message for artists of all kinds in our times. To that end, I’m making 100 videos over the coming 100 days (or so) to explain all the different angles and ideas, and to hopefully spark inspiration in you! Each video will have inspirational and practical ideas for you to bring more Soulforce to your life as a performing artist.
These ideas are a part of my upcoming book: “Soulforce Performance Arts: Redefining Artistic Performance, Practice, and Pedagogy in a World That’s Lost Its Mind.” Subscribers to my newsletter will get early access and special perks!
