Workshop Description:
“The Awakened Body: Alexander Technique For Meditators”
Reduce Pain, Free Your Body, & Free Your Mind
We meditate for many reasons: to uncover our inherent goodness, raise self-awareness and acceptance, and discover new levels of connection and consciousness, among others. Yet in our practice of “mindfulness,” we often forget the crucial role of the body in experiencing personal growth, connection, and insight – both on the cushion and in everyday life.
In this workshop, individual or group exercises will introduce you to the Alexander Technique, a 100-year-old holistic system of body awareness and movement re-education. Hands-on movement explorations, body-based guided meditations, and practical tips will help you to find the balance of awareness and relaxation so that you can meditate with more comfort and advance your practice.
The benefits of Alexander Technique for meditators:
  • Teaches how releasing your patterns of muscular tension also releases you from unconscious attitudes and emotional blocks
  • Relieves excess musculoskeletal pain
  • Offers an effective framework for working with posture and carriage, both on and off the cushion
The Alexander Technique even provides an avenue for imparting an experience of “emptiness” in an embodied, direct, and non-conceptual way.
This workshop features meditation instruction by Alexander deVaron and hands-on Alexander Technique guidance by Joseph Arnold.
Joseph Arnold is an Alexander Technique teacher and musician, and lives in Philadelphia. He has taught Alexander Technique as a part of Shambhala meditation programs, including the Urban Retreat, on three separate occasions.
“Joseph is an extremely gifted teacher of the Alexander technique. His work combines powerful hands-on guidance and exploration with skillful verbal prompts and inquiry. I have benefited tremendously from my work with him, and highly recommend him to anyone who is interested in pursuing the Alexander Technique.” – Alexander DeVaron, former Philadelphia Shambhala Center Shastri
