WELCOME!

Hi, I’m Joseph Arnold—violinist, Alexander Technique teacher, award-winning author, and Director of the Soulforce Arts Institute.

If you’re a musician struggling with pain, tension, performance anxiety, burnout, or self-doubt, I want you to know: I’ve been there, too.

VIOLINIST, INTERRUPTED

I grew up loving to play my violin for others. But when I went to music school, I soon began to experience pain in both arms, as well as intense stage fright. After a short while, the pain only intensified and made playing violin impossible for more than a few minutes.

So, I started to see all the doctors, specialists, and wellness professionals I could find. You name it, I tried it. After a year, I was still in pain and without clear answers. Was my career as a violinist over before it began?

Then, I took a class on Alexander Technique. In that class, I learned a crucial lesson: the pain in my arms was something I was doing to myself. I had become so used to holding excess tension in my body that I was hurting myself without realizing it.

I then learned how to release the excess tension in my body, even while playing the most difficult repertoire. This changed everything for me!

For one, it relieved my pain permanently. Since then, I have played completely pain-free, and have enjoyed a thriving career as a professional violinist.

In addition, the Alexander Technique made my technique fluid and effortless, and allowed my sound quality to become more open, resonant, and alive than ever before.

Most importantly, the Alexander Technique also showed me how to open a channel to my inner expressive potential – my Soulforce – and let it flow through my sound to move my audiences’ souls.

At the time, I was shocked to realize that so much of my musical training had been focused on technique and mechanics, but that this approach had left out the very things that make playing music meaningful: enjoyment, flow, ease, heart, and soul.

I then made my life’s mission to help other musicians rediscover their own ease and soul, and this is why I started the Soulforce Arts Institute. Since then, I have helped hundreds of musicians relieve injuries, overcome stage fright, and find ease and soul in their performances.
